The Sr. Director, Enterprise Data Governance provides enterprise-wide leadership for defining, implementing, and scaling data governance across the organization. This role is accountable for establishing data policies, standards, and operating models that ensure data is trusted, secure, compliant, and fit for advanced analytics and AI-driven use cases, including Agentic Enterprise capabilities. The role partners closely with Data Platform, Security, Privacy, Legal, Audit, and Business Domain leaders to embed governance as a core enterprise capability.
Key Responsibilities
Enterprise Governance Strategy & Leadership
- Define and evolve the enterprise data governance strategy aligned to business priorities, regulatory obligations, and AI readiness.
- Serve as the executive owner for Enterprise Data Governance (EDG), providing vision, prioritization, and outcomes-based leadership.
- Act as a trusted advisor to executive stakeholders, including the CDO, CIO, Security, Privacy, and Audit leadership.
Policies, Standards & Risk Management
- Own the development, maintenance, and enforcement of enterprise data policies and standards.
- Establish and govern the Request for Change (RFC) process for policies and standards.
- Partner with Security and Privacy teams to enforce data security, privacy, and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure governance controls support SOX, Internal Audit, and external regulatory compliance.
Data Mesh & Domain Governance Enablement
- Lead governance enablement for Data Mesh adoption, including domain modeling (L1, L2, subject areas), stewardship alignment, and accountability.
- Drive governance-as-code requirements to enable scalable, automated enforcement.
- Oversee data steward training, enablement programs, and data management maturity assessments (e.g., DCAM).
- Chair or sponsor the Enterprise Data Governance Council and working groups.
Insights, Metrics & Compliance Oversight
- Define and operationalize Data Management Compliance (DM Compliance) metrics across accountability, classification, catalog, lineage, and data quality.
- Oversee governance KPIs, dashboards, trend analysis, and executive reporting.
- Establish maturity baselines and remediation plans using industry frameworks such as DCAM.
- Provide transparent reporting on policy compliance, SOX deficiencies, Internal Audit findings, and security vulnerabilities.
Operating Model & Team Leadership
- Build, lead, and scale a high-performing, multi-disciplinary EDG organization.
- Define clear roles, responsibilities, and career paths across governance, policy, and insights functions.
- Manage resource planning, backfill justification, and budget alignment for enterprise governance priorities.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Organizational Scope
- Leads centralized Enterprise Data Governance functions, including:
- Data Policies & Standards
- DG Domain Governance for Data Mesh Enablement
- DG Insights & Reporting
- Partners closely with Data Platform Services, Analytics, Engineering, and Business Domain teams.
Required Qualifications
- 12+ years of experience in data governance, data management, risk management, or related enterprise data roles.
- Proven experience leading large, cross-functional programs in complex enterprise environments.
- Deep knowledge of data governance frameworks, policies, and regulatory requirements (e.g., SOX, privacy regulations).
- Experience implementing governance operating models in modern data platforms and Data Mesh environments.
- Strong executive communication and stakeholder management skills.
- A related technical degree required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with industry maturity models such as DCAM.
- Familiarity with governance-as-code, metadata management, and data observability concepts.
- Background supporting AI, analytics, and Agent-based platforms.
- Experience working in highly regulated or public-sector (e.g., FedRAMP) environments.
Success Measures
- Measurable improvement in Data Management Compliance and DCAM maturity.
- Reduced audit findings and improved regulatory readiness.
- Scaled adoption of Data Mesh with embedded governance.
- High stakeholder trust and clear executive visibility into data risk and compliance.

At Salesforce, we believe in equitable compensation practices that reflect the dynamic nature of labor markets across various regions.The typical base salary range for this position is $191,100 - $320,600 annually. In select cities within the San Francisco and New York City metropolitan area, the base salary range for this role is $228,600 - $348,600 annually.The range represents base salary only, and does not include company bonus, incentive for sales roles, equity or benefits, as applicable.
